With the last major version released back in 2007 (those were the days, eh?) you’d be forgiven for thinking there weren’t any more coming, but we’ve actually been hard at work on an update to bring us crashing into 2008, a little late. If the scrobbling and event information sounds intriguing, give Last.fm a try, but don't expect to stick around for very long. The service has devolved from a solid streaming music service to a beta that's missing several basic features. Last.fm is flawed, there's no doubt about it. However, the YouTube track quality was a bit hit or miss, which is what you would expect from a service that lets users freely upload content. After spending hours listening to music, I placed Last.fm's audio quality (which is really Spotify's audio quality) on par with Slacker Radio's sound. Unless you're a raging audiophile, Last.fm's sound quality should prove satisfactory. The top 20 artists during my testing time included Adele, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, and, surprisingly, Elvis. If you're looking for a deep-dive into obscure music, this isn't the feature for you. The Live section doesn't contain live audio content instead, it displays real-time information about what's trending in the Last.fm global community. Last.fm also lacks Tidal's entertaining and informative editorials. Slacker Radio ($0.00 at ) (Opens in a new window) has lyrics for many songs and live ESPN Radio broadcasts. I like these extras, but I lament the lack of lyrics and live content. Mousing over a track reveals a play button that launches an audio stream clicking an artist name opens a biography page that reveals, say, Rihanna's most popular Last.fm tracks, photos, upcoming concerts, and other music-related information. For example, Pandora Radio recently purchased Rdio, and AOL Music is now powered by Slacker Radio. There's been a bit of streaming music consolidation in recent years. The Spotify integration is an unsurprising move. I chalk this up to Last.fm's beta status. Oddly, Last.fm sometimes continues playing a track to its conclusion even after I closed the browser tab in which it ran. In my testing, sometimes it played the music from within Last.fm's homepage other times it attemptd to launch Spotify's desktop application. That said, Last.fm's handling of the Spotify streams left me confused. If Last.fm is unable to find an artist or song in Spotify's library, it will automatically turn to YouTube for assistance -a nice touch.
